Twenty Something Dives into Medical Coding

Robert Kiesecker, CPC, CCC first took the plunge into medical coding when the dive shop he worked for in high school laid him off. And his career has been swimming along ever since.Kiesecker passed the Certified Professional Coding exam while still in his late teens, and was the first coder in the state of Arizona to earn the AAPC’s cardiology certification – now called the CCC. These days he’s a cardiology coder and auditor at HCC Consultants in Phoenix. What happened after he got laid off from the dive shop in high school? “I put on my dress clothes and started looking for the best job I could find,” Kiesecker jokes. He landed a job as an “all purpose” medical office assistant – filing records, taking meeting notes, and “building desks.” He later took a similar job at a cardiology office, and was told to “hold down the fort” when the office’s medical coder left abruptly. While the practice searched for an experienced coder, Kiesecker learned what he could. As time passed, Kiesecker grew into the job, earned his CPC, and decided to try to earn the AAPC’s new-at-the-time cardiology specialty certification. Kiesecker did what many smart, young coders do…He turned to his local AAPC chapter in Phoenix to find a mentor who had passed the CCC. But because the test was so new, no one is his area had passed. Figuring he nothing to lose, Kiesecker took the exam and passed. What gave him a leg up? Looking back, being fresh out of high school helped him learn coding and pass the exams, Kiesecker recalls. “I was used to looking through books to find definitions,” he explains. The big disadvantage to coming into coding straight out of school was a lack of clinical experience, he says. He saw that former nurses or others with clinical experience could teach him a lot, so he sought out mentors through his AAPC local chapter and other coding events. These days Kiesecker sharpens his coding skills with EncoderPro, Supercoder.com, or “just googling to see what comes up.” Like many cardiology coders, he’s also a fan of Dr. David Zielske’s classes and reference materials. Where’s his next dive? What started as a temporary gig has become a “job that will take me wherever I want to go,” Kiesecker says. He’s working on a bachelor’s degree in Health Care Administration, and recently served as his local chapter’s coding education officer. In the future, he’d would like to do more teaching, perhaps in a community colleges. He says the students he meets get lots of good billing knowledge in their college classes, but their coding knowledge is sometimes sketchy. That’s where he hopes to help out someday. Throughout the world there are several destinations which offer for great scuba diving. The Caribbean is one of these locations, and it is renowned for its diving. It’s no surprise that all three of the following dives are located there.

First off, when you are a beginner, you need not worry because there are a lot of good beginner diving sites that you can go out to. Not only that but there are a lot of trainers that will help you in learning how to dive. There are also a lot of good equipment that you can use when you want to go out and experience how to dive. In Boracay, you can experience how it is to dive and you can be treated to a wonderful scenery even if the site is a beginner site. However, as you progress to learn the different skills that you need in scuba diving, you can be assured that if you want a more challenging dive site, there other places that you can go to.

Hawaii scuba diving presents an assortment of beautiful tropical fish and some of the most gorgeous coral formations all through the island chain, which makes it one of the best scuba diving locations as well. Maui or Kauai is an excellent way to take pleasure in the marine life of the islands. Operators, resorts, dive boats, and dive shops are on hand throughout Hawaii. The warm water dives amidst large green sea turtles, hundreds of brightly colored fishes, and sharks, adds to the excitement and thrill of every scuba dive.

One of the most popular and best scuba diving locations, Florida keys boasts of lovely coral formations, luxuriously warm gulf water, and of course the abundance of tropical fish. Florida also offers thousands of dive locations that offer limitless diving adventure and packed with quality diving stores, operators, and instructors that can assist one to discover the best of Florida scuba diving.

Did two dives here, off of the Coral Cay Beach. I do not know the names of the spots as I dove with a non-english speaking fisherman (not recommended). The water was great, 85 degrees year round, but visibility was only about 100 feet, but I think this was due to the rough water (about 6 foot swells).

This diving was the best “terrain diving” I have ever done. There was not a whole lot of fish life, but the walls and reefs were incredible. The first dive was on a wall going from 60 feet to 180 feet. There were some large eagle rays and schools of grouper, but what held my attention was the sheer magnitude of the walls. They were totally covered with reef life and there were beautiful colors everywhere. There were lots of ravines and caves to explore, and although the bottom of the wall was unreachable at 180 feet, you could see it at all times, which made the wall seem enormous in perspective.

Ever since I was 8 to 11 years old my swimming teatcher in school always tried to teach me how to dive but I always ended up doing a belly flop and swallowing tons of water. Even if i have my mouth shut the water goes up in my nose. It’s summer now so maybe I can train diving from a bridge.

well you should hold both of your hands above your head and stand on the edge of your deck/landing and act like your jumping but instead of jumping up, jump out. if you have to hold your nose, work on not holding that first.
